Howard Moose

Self-Portrait carved in soapstone.

Howard Moose was born in South Indian Lake, Manitoba and began carving wood as a child using a pocket knife.

In the early 80’s he began working with soapstone. Over the years Howard has continued to master his skills and produces beautiful aboriginal artwork, specializing in northern wildlife and First Nations peoples.

Howard’s pieces can be found in the collection of the Legislature Building in Winnipeg and the private collection of former US President Jimmy Carter.

Kwakwaka’wakw Ceremonial Paddle -

This paddle is carved and painted yellow cedar, by Ian Sy Wallace, from Quatsino First Nations, located in the Northern Part of Vancouver Island.

The paddle is 58” in length and 7 1/2 inches width at its widest point. It is masterfully carved; displaying clean cuts, deep carving and fantastic detail.

It is adorned with the Sisiutl - the two-headed serpent - and inscribed with the following from the artist:

“This creature could turn himself into anything he wanted to be. The Sisiutl was a mighty creature.  He had lightning coming out of his eyes when he was angry.  Sometimes it wsa a bad omen to see him but most of the time it was a good omen.  Enjoy. March 17th, 2004.”
